Top Reasons Why Your Heating Bill Is High This Winter And How To Start Saving!

heating bill too highMany homeowners are used to receiving higher bills in the wintertime due to the costs of home heating. Trust us when we tell you that while we understand that heating your home can be expensive, there are ways to save on your home heat this winter by looking into a few factors that could be causing your bill to be higher than it needs to be!

Here are a few suggestions of what to check within your home to see if any of these factors could be the reason your bill is high:

  • Insulation: poor insulation can be a big factor when it comes to why your heating bill is higher than it needs to be. It certainly makes sense; if the heat that is being pumped into your home is not being retained within your indoor space, the heating system has to work harder and harder to produce enough heat to get to the temperature that you’ve set.

One of the clues that your insulation is a problem is a lack of warmth within your home even when you’ve set the thermostat to a warm temperature. This is a sign that your insulation is not sufficient. If you think this could be your problem, you need to have your insulation inspected. This will help you to understand what condition it’s in and what you may need to do to fix it.

  • Ductwork Leaks: this is a common issue for homes that have a forced-air heating system. If there are leaks in the ductwork, you have the same issue as above; the hot air is getting wasted by leaking out instead of being forced (as it should) into the rooms in your home that you would like to heat.

You can check on this by listening, feeling, and seeing if you can determine that a leak exists in your ductwork. If there is a leak, it’s time to call a professional! This is not a time for a DIY home project. Ductwork leaks can be difficult to get to and require professional expertise to fix.

  • Furnace: all furnaces have a certain lifespan. Most last about 25 years. When you have an older furnace, you should consider replacing it. As furnaces age, they can lose their efficiency. While the cost to purchase a furnace is not cheap, a well-working furnace can actually save you money in the long run because it will be working at full strength as opposed to one that could be working at about 80% if it’s dated.

This is also a job for a professional. By making sure you keep up with routine maintenance, you can ensure that all of the parts are working properly, there are no carbon monoxide leaks and no rust or dirt is forming in unwanted places.

When it comes to home heating, you can trust Clay’s Climate Control to guide you in the right direction this winter! We’ll be happy to help you figure out how you can save on your heating bill. Give us a call today at 609-916-1106!

Everything You Need To Know About Replacing Your Boiler This Winter

What You Need To Know About Replacing A Boiler

All home heating systems get their heat from either a furnace or a residential boiler. If you have an older boiler, chances are it is not as efficient as a furnace. Knowing if your boiler should be replaced or what type of condition it’s in is not common knowledge to homeowners. We’ve put together everything you need to know about your boiler below so that you can make sure you’re prepared for cold weather this winter.

How Do You Know What Condition Your Boiler Is In?

There are a few signs you can look for to know what type of condition your residential boiler is in.

No Heat: if you’re not feeling any heat, but your thermostat seems to be working ok, check to see if the pilot light on your boiler is on. That is all you are checking! Once you see it on, make sure to call a professional to continue digging into the issue. This is no work for amateurs!

Leakage: Leaking or dripping around your boiler can be a simple or complex problem to fix. Again, you want to call a professional to take a look as there could be an issue with the pressure or an internal issue with one of the parts that may need to be replaced.

Low Pressure: If your system continually shuts off or you’re not feeling a lot of heat, it could be a low-pressure issue. Take a look at the pressure gauge. Anything below 1 means that you have a low-pressure issue.

Unusual Noise: If your system starts to make loud noises, there could be a couple of things happening here. The first is just that some air could have gotten caught in there and the problem will fix itself. The other issue could be “kettling” which is a buildup on the heat exchanger that causes the water to overheat and restricts flow. This can cause these kettle-like noises that alert you to this problem.

Once you know what condition your boiler is in, you will know if it needs to be replaced. If you do decide to replace your boiler, make sure you consider the following:

Things To Consider When Choosing A Boiler Replacement:

Boilers are common in the Northeast. They produce steam or hot water that gets distributed throughout the home. You can choose between a condensing or non-condensing boiler. Condensing boilers are extremely energy efficient because they can provide a great deal of heat while operating at a lower temperature. Non-condensing boilers operate at a much higher temperature – so much so that the heat often gets vented outside.

Another consideration to take into account is whether to get a sealed-combustion or non-sealed combustion unit. You always want to go for the sealed combustion unit! Sealed combustion units would be our choice because it brings outside air into the burner and then sends exhaust air outside!

How Snow Can Affect Your Heater This Winter

How Snow Can Affect Your Heater This Winter

If you live in the Northeast, you may be aware that snow can affect your heater. It’s common during snowstorms for heaters to need repair due to loss of heat. This is something that we’re pretty sure you would like to avoid if possible. No one likes to be without heat during a snowstorm!

Snow removal is key during and after a storm. Snow can cause the following issues for your heater if not removed:

Blocks the air intake: If the air intake is blocked, it can cause the unit to shut down.
Blocks the exhaust: Just as much as HVAC units need to be able to take in air to function, they also need to expel air as well. Snow and ice can cause the exhaust to be blocked, thus causing the unit to shut down.
Corrosion can occur: Snow that melts or heavy rain can cause problems for gas furnaces or boilers because they have materials that can be damaged due to water.
Damaged fans/fins: Most fans/fins are made from aluminum, which can easily be damaged by the weight of snow or ice. A loud noise when your heater is on can indicate that this damage took place.

Winter HVAC Tips:

Based on the information that we shared above, it’s important to keep the unit clear of snow. Immediately after a snowstorm, part of your snow removal plan for your home should include clearing your HVAC unit. Make sure that all snow is removed and if there is ice, we suggest pouring hot water over it to melt the ice.

Here are some basic tips to keep your heating system working this winter:

Place System Above Ground: When your heating system is being installed, make sure that it is placed 6-10 inches above the surface so that it is above the highest likely amount of snow that will fall. The height will help ensure that it doesn’t get surrounded by snow that will block the air intake and exhaust features. It should also be placed about 18 inches away from the home so that it can get proper airflow and avoid any drifts that can occur from snow accumulation.

Remove Debris: Regularly check your gutters to make sure that unwanted debris is not falling on to the unit. If there is debris on the unit, make sure you clear it so that the unit can function properly.

Change Filter Regularly: In order for the system to function as it should, air needs to be able to flow with ease. Dirty filters can restrict this flow, thus making your system work harder and sometimes can cause it to malfunction altogether.

We hope these winter HVAC tips were helpful to you as you prepare for the weather conditions that may be in our near future! If you have any additional questions or need assistance with your heating system from one of our certified technicians, give us a call at 609-916-1106.

5 Tips to Get Your Home Heating System Ready for Winter

heating system ready for winterTaking care of your home’s heating and cooling system is a necessary job for all homeowners. It’s that time of year again to get ready for the colder winter months around your house! One of the most important aspects of your home to prepare for is your home heating system. Those that do this yearly understand the significant benefits of making sure that your home heating system is ready for those frigid days ahead.

We’ve gathered some of our top tips for preparing your home heating system for the winter ahead:

  • Furnace Cleanings Go a Long Way!

One of the keys to a furnace working well is to get annual HVAC maintenance. This maintenance service includes changing the filter on your furnace, which is integral to the system performing most efficiently. If a filter is not clean, the system has to work harder to pump that warm air into your home. Furnace filters should be changed out regularly – monthly during the winter.

  • Turn Off Your Home Cooling System – You Only Need The Heat For Now

Believe it or not, it is recommended that you turn off your central air conditioning system for the wintertime. The reason that you want to manually shut it off is that some systems automatically turn back on if there is a warmer day, which can cause water that it generates to freeze when the temperature drops again. To avoid this, make sure you turn the system off for the winter and add a mesh AC cover to your condenser unit outside to protect it from harsh winter weather.

  • Furnace Area Cleanliness

Keeping the area around the furnace and boiler clean is also a fire prevention tactic! Equally as important is making sure that the areas around your air ducts and vents are cleared so that your warm air can flow through easily. Keep in mind that you don’t want your home heating system to have to work harder than it should have to.

  • Show Your Hot Water Tank Some TLC

A great way to get your hot water tank ready to work this winter is to flush it out to remove any sediment that may have built up over the summer months. Also, it’s a good idea to check the pressure relief valve to make sure it’s working as it should before you need to rely on it!

  • Leak Patrol!

Our final tip is to check for leaks. The last thing that you want to have happened is to have leaks in your air ducts preventing the warm air from getting to where you want it to go.  You can check them by looking for any holes, leaks, or loose joints around the ductwork. If you find any, this can be easily fixed by a ductwork repair company.

Sweater Weather May Be In, But So Are Tankless Water Heaters — Here’s Why

tankless water heatersThe colder temps are officially nipping at our noses, and with this switch in weather comes the cranking up of your heat at home. If you’re tired of dealing with an old heating system that takes forever to work, requires a lot of maintenance and drives up your utility bills, then this is the time to install a new tankless water heater. Read on to learn more!

Lower Utility Bills That’ll Warm You Right Up

Tankless water heaters are known for being more energy efficient than other heating systems, which means your utility bills will decrease in price. In fact, this type of heating system is often referred to as “on-demand” water heaters because they only heat the water in your home when you turn the hot water tap on. Thanks to these “on-demand” high-efficiency features, your system can quickly heat up when you need it to—rather than wasting gas or electricity—which will be reflected in your monthly bills.

An Extended Lifespan You’ll Want to Get Wrapped Up In

Unlike a tank water heater—which typically lasts between 5 and 10 years—tankless water heaters can last up to 20 years if they are provided with proper and consistent maintenance. Constantly having to replace a tank water heater is a headache—it also drains your wallet. So rather than replacing your current system with a new tank water heater, replace it with a tankless water heater and enjoy it for up to 20 years!

Endless Hot Water That Makes It Easy to Get Cozy

Gone are the days of running out of hot water and taking cold showers. With a tankless water heater, as soon as the hot water tap is switched on, powerful gas or electricity will kick in and instantly heat the water that runs through the coils in the unit. Thanks to this quick and efficient system, you’re quickly provided with hot water that will last as long as you want it to.

Bundle Yourself Up With the Joy of Less Maintenance

Although all HVAC equipment is best when it is properly maintained, a tankless water system requires much less maintenance than a water heater tank. Typically, water heater tanks should undergo routine maintenance every 6 months; in contrast, a tankless water heater can go approximately 4 or 5 years without maintenance. However, if you live in an area with hard water, cleaning your tankless water heater annually to remove mineral buildup is highly recommended.

Saving Space Is an Added Layer of a Benefit

Tired of your huge water heater tank taking up precious space in your home? We don’t blame you—they may be able to hold up to between 40 and 60 gallons of water, but they’re also about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide! By installing a tankless water heater, you can still store the same amount of water, but you can do so with a system that’s a little over 2 feet tall and only 20 inches wide, giving you more space in your home to enjoy.

Ready to reap the many benefits of a tankless water heater? The team at Clay’s Climate Control is here to help! From replacement to installation to repairs, we’re here for all of your heating needs. Contact us today!

Ask the Expert: How can I be sure my furnace isn’t leaking out carbon monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide LeakThis is a great question, and one that requires the attention of homeowners as soon as the temperature outside drops low enough that the furnace needs to be turned on. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a furnace can pose a threat every winter. When furnaces are not properly maintained by an HVAC professional every year, there may be issues with the unit that can lead to the leaking of carbon monoxide—an invisible, odorless gas that is emitted from a damaged furnace and kills hundreds of people every year, while also making thousands sick.

Schedule Furnace Maintenance

To be sure that your furnace is working properly and is not emitting carbon monoxide, the first step is to schedule a furnace maintenance appointment with a heating expert. Once your furnace has been maintained, the next step it to make sure that you 1) have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home, and 2) regularly maintain these to make sure that they are functioning properly.

Save Up to 10% a Year on Your Heating Bill

Not only will annually maintaining your furnace help you prevent a dangerous carbon monoxide leakage, but you will also enjoy the added bonus of saving up to 10% a year in your heating bill! This is because a well-maintained furnace will run more efficiently and effectively, so it won’t waste energy heating your home.

Being Proactive

Now, just because you are staying on top of your furnace’s maintenance every year does not mean that there are not other proactive steps you can take in between the yearly checkups! In addition to scheduling annual maintenance, you can also do the following:

  • Regularly replace your furnace’s filter.
  • Keep the fan compartment door tightly closed; this will prevent it from having to work overtime.
  • Look for burned or damaged wiring; using a flashlight will make this easier to see!
  • Check to see if the flue of your furnace is well-connected to the masonry or metal flue; this will keep carbon monoxide from escaping if there is a leak present.

Your furnace is there to make your home warm and cozy in the winter, not dangerous, and here at Clay’s Climate Control, we do everything we can to make sure your HVAC equipment can be easily and properly maintained—that is why we offer our 3C Maintenance Plan! If you live in Linwood, Atlantic County, or Northern Cape May County, NJ, contact the experts at Clay’s today to schedule your furnace appointment!

How to Determine the Right Size Heating System for You

Nothing beats returning to your warm home on a cold, winter day in Southern New Jersey. A comfortable home all begins with an efficient and effective heating system, but not all heating systems are created the same. There are many variations to your common heating system, one of the biggest differences being equipment size. The size of your heating system can determine how well it works to heat your home at a reasonable cost. At Clay’s, it is our goal to help keep residents of Ocean City, Somers Point NJ and surrounding areas comfortable. Continue reading for more information on how to select the right size heating system for you and your home.

Having the appropriate sized heating system for your home is important for a variety of reasons. When it comes to size, people are inclined to think that bigger is better, but this is not always the case. A larger heating system can lead to your home being heated too quickly, constantly using energy, as well as inappropriate humidity levels in your home which can contribute to your home feeling dry during the winter months. All of this will lead to discomfort, higher energy bills, and more repairs and fast replacement down the line.

The right sized heating system for your home will heat it at a steady rate, keeping your home comfortable without costing you a fortune in energy bills. It will adequately account for the size of your home and your lifestyle.

When choosing a system that is right for your home, it’s important to consider your home’s heating and cooling “load.” There are many things that factor into your load, including square footage of your home, construction, orientation towards the sun, number, size, and placement of doors and windows. With these calculations in mind, you still need to consider your family’s personal heating and cooling needs. For example, are occupants home throughout the day or primarily in the mornings and evenings? Are there pets that will require the home to remain at a fairly moderate temperature?

Needless to say, figuring out the right size unit for your home can be a complicated process. That is why if you’re purchasing a new system or replacing an existing one it is important to consult a professional to determine the best system for you and your home.

Why Go Tankless?

Hot water is an essential component of comfortable living in your home, especially during the cold winter months. This is why it is so important to have a reliable and effective hot water heater at your disposal. You know you have a hot water heater in your home, but unless you’ve run into issues it’s unlikely you’ve put much thought into replacing it. Replacing your hot water heater is inevitable, however, and when the time comes it’s a good idea to consider a tankless water heater. Here are just a few of the benefits of going tankless.

  • Energy efficient: Tankless water heaters work by heating water on an as needed basis, which means that it isn’t constantly working to keep sitting water warm. As a result of this, tankless heaters use 30 to 50% less energy than units with tanks. These kinds of energy savings ensure that you’ll see roughly $100 off your water bill each year.

  • Space saving: Unlike a traditional bulky water heater that takes up space in a closet or basement, a tankless heater is compact and is usually mounted on a wall. This is key for those living in a smaller space, looking to maximize their square footage. A mounted heater frees up floor space for additional storage.

  • Cleaner water: Because water isn’t sitting in a tank waiting to be used, the warm water used in your home is actually cleaner and safer. With a tankless water heater, you avoid using water that has had the opportunity to accumulate rust and scale.

  • Longer life expectancy: Tankless water heaters, when properly maintained, can easily last up to 20 years. This is 5 to 10 years longer than you can expect to have a more traditional water heater. While it may be more expensive to install a tankless heater initially, you will see your return on investment over time.

  • Never run out of hot water: Nothing is worse than getting into a shower to find the water running cold within a few seconds. With a tankless water heater, you’ll never have to worry about running out of hot water. This is ideal for families with multiple bathrooms, those with hot tubs or whirlpools, and is truly one of the biggest benefits of having a tankless water heater.
